Nu's $1B net income and 33% ROE headline hides a slowing engine: revenue growth decelerating, efficiency ratio up to 20%, and vague credit quality. Is the growth story cracking? Read the full analysis to see what management isn't telling you.
The Lede and the Real Story
Nu Holdings just crossed a historic threshold—$1.06 billion in net income for Q2 2026, a 67% year-over-year jump, with return on equity hitting 33%. The stock popped 9.3% to $15.23 on the news, and CEO David Vélez opened the call by declaring that the company’s 13-year-old hypothesis—that a branchless, tech-driven bank could serve hundreds of millions at a fraction of the cost—’continues to play out exactly as we envisioned.’ But beneath the celebratory headline numbers lies a more complicated picture: revenue growth is decelerating, the company’s prized efficiency ratio is slipping, and management has quietly shifted the metrics they emphasize—away from the operational realities that matter most to long-term investors.
The quarter’s headline beats are real: revenue of $5.88 billion beat consensus by 9.1%, and EPS of $0.23 beat by 15.9%. But compare that to Q1 2026, when revenue was $4.97 billion and EPS was $0.18—both missed expectations. The sequential jump in revenue (18%) and EPS (28%) looks impressive, but the year-over-year growth rate has slowed from 45% in Q4 2025 to roughly 35% in Q2 2026. Meanwhile, the efficiency ratio—a key measure of operating discipline—rose to 20% from 18% in Q1, a sign that the ‘AI-driven efficiency’ narrative may be hitting diminishing returns. The real story is that Nu is maturing, and the market is paying a premium for a growth story that is increasingly showing its age.
