The Qullamaggie Trading Bible

A Complete Guide for Absolute Beginners to the Swedish Trader’s System

1. Who Is Qullamaggie? Why Learn from Him?

Kristjan Kullamägi (online handle Qullamaggie) is a Swedish trader who started in 2011. In the beginning, like most beginners, he had no system, bought randomly, and blew up his account several times. The turning point came when he stopped trading and studied thousands of historical stock charts of massive winners, identifying the common patterns they formed before taking off.
Starting with a small account in 2013, he grew his portfolio to over $100 million by 2021. This isn’t an exaggeration—he publicly shares his trading records, win rates, and risk management methods.
His method relies on three core setups:

  • Breakout (Pushing out of consolidation)
  • Episodic Pivot / EP (Event-driven gap-up)
  • Parabolic Short (Shorting parabolic tops—our system does not do this; we only trade long).
⚠️ Important Reminder: After his account peaked in late 2021, Qullamaggie suffered massive drawdowns in the 2022 bear market because he ignored his own market filter rules (he continued being aggressively long into a downtrend). This story is a lesson in itself: No matter how good your strategy is, you will lose money if you lack discipline.

2. Core Philosophy: How to Get Rich While “losing More often than winning”

The hardest thing for beginners to accept is this: Qullamaggie’s win rate is only 20% to 35%. This means out of 10 trades, 7 or 8 might be losers. So how does he make so much money?
The answer is asymmetrical risk/reward: When he wins, he wins big. When he loses, he loses very little.

“It’s all about making 5 to 20+ times your initial risk. You can be highly profitable with a 25%-30% win rate. The key is keeping losses microscopic and letting winners run.” — Qullamaggie

This philosophy demands three things from you:

  1. Strict stop losses: You cannot predict which trade will work, so small losses are your only safety net.
  2. Patience with winners: Use trailing stops to ride the entire trend instead of taking profits too early.
  3. Accepting losing streaks: “Paper cuts” are a normal business expense in this system.

3. the Three Major Setups Explained

3.1 Breakout

After a strong stock surges, it will consolidate sideways. The price moves up and down within a range, volatility shrinks, and volume dries up. Four conditions must appear before entry:

  1. Moving Averages Catch Up: Price touches the 10-day or 20-day EMA.
  2. Extreme Volatility Contraction: Daily price swings become very tight.
  3. Volume Dries Up: Daily volume drops well below average.
  4. Refusal to Drop: The stock holds its highs despite broader market weakness.

3.2 Episodic Pivot (EP)

A stock experiences a massive catalyst (blowout earnings, FDA approval) and gaps up heavily at the open (≥ 10%) with massive volume. Institutions take months to build positions, so Day 1 is often just the beginning of a massive run.
Because our EOD (End of Day) AI system cannot execute intraday trades at the open, we utilize AVWAP (Anchored VWAP) Pullbacks:

  • Anchor an average price line starting from the EP day.
  • If the price pulls back and holds at this line in the following days, it confirms buyers are defending their positions. Our AI executes on this confirmation.

3.3 Continuation Base

After surging heavily (≥ 30%), a leader rarely dies immediately. It will pause sideways for 3 to 15 days to digest profits before breaking out into wave two. Catching this base allows you to ride the next leg of momentum.

4. ADR: The Soul of Qullamaggie’s Strategy

ADR = Average Daily Range. It measures how wildly a stock swings on an average day.
If a boring stock only moves 1% a day, your risk-to-reward ratio will be terrible. A high ADR means the stock has explosive potential. Qullamaggie demands an ADR of 3% to 5% or higher.

Scan Type Minimum ADR Requirement
ADR Screen ≥ 3.0%
1-Month Top Gainers ≥ 2.4%
3-Month & 6-Month Top Gainers ≥ 3.5%

5. Position Sizing: How to Afford Losing

Qullamaggie works backward: He finds the stop-loss level, calculates the percentage distance, and uses that to determine his position size based on his maximum allowed cash loss (e.g., $500 per trade).

Stop Loss Distance Allowed Investment Size
1.0% (Intraday ORB) Maximum Size
2.0% (Standard 5-min ORB) Standard Size
5.0% (High ADR volatile stocks) Minimum Size

6. Market Filter: When to Attack and When to Stop

Qullamaggie has one ironclad rule, regardless of individual stock setups:

If the index (QQQ/SPY) 10-day EMA is ABOVE the 20-day EMA → Attack.

If the 10-day EMA drops BELOW the 20-day EMA → Stop entirely. Open no new trades.

Fighting the broader market trend ruins your win rate. Our system checks this filter daily and completely halts buying during a “Risk-Off” environment.

7. Stop Losses and Exits: Protecting Profits

Initial Stop Loss: We use the low of the signal day, but never allow it to drop further than 1 full ADR away to prevent runaway losses.
Trailing Stops: Once in profit, trail your stop upward using the 10-day EMA (for super-strong stocks) or the 20-day EMA (for normally strong stocks). Sell immediately if the stock closes below the line.
The Iron Rules:

  • Never average down (adding money to a losing trade).
  • Never widen your stop loss to give a stock “more room”.
  • If the stop is hit, get out at the next market open. No exceptions.

8. How Our AI Trader Works (Vs. Human Trading)

We built an end-of-day automated system to mimic Qullamaggie on a virtual portfolio. Here is full transparency on our technical limitations:

Human Method Our EOD AI Alternative
Intraday breakout entry Closing price breaks pivot + high volume → Enters next day’s open.
EP Day-1 Intraday Entry We don’t fake this. We use AVWAP pullbacks days later.
Open Range Low Stop Uses the “Signal Day Low” or “1x ADR” (whichever is stricter).

9. Understanding the Watchlist

Because we wait for perfect setups and pullbacks, we maintain a public Watchlist. A status of TRACKING_AVWAP means an EP occurred and we are stalking the pullback. COILING means a stock is in consolidation waiting for a breakout. Not trading does not mean the system is idle; patience is the ultimate edge.

10. How to Read Our Articles

Each post includes the Market Filter status, a Portfolio Snapshot, and the daily Watchlist for free. Paid members gain access to detailed Open Position tracking and “Today’s Triggers” showing precise charts, stops, and execution logic for new buys.

11. Glossary of Terms

  • ADR: Average Daily Range.
  • AVWAP: Anchored Volume Weighted Average Price.
  • EMA: Exponential Moving Average.
  • EP: Episodic Pivot (massive event-driven gap-up).
  • R-Multiple: Risk multiplier (1R = total dollar amount risked on a trade).
  • VCP: Volatility Contraction Pattern.

12. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Isn’t a 20-35% win rate proof the system doesn’t work?
A: No. The system mathematically relies on frequent tiny losses and rare massive winners. You must look at the Average Win vs. Average Loss ratio.
Q: The AI says “EP Today”, does that mean we bought intraday?
A: No. By the time we detect an EP, Day 1 is over. We stalk the AVWAP pullback over the coming days.
Q: How similar is this AI to the real Qullamaggie?
A: The core logic (ADR, Market Filters, EMA stops) is identical. Execution mechanics differ purely because our AI runs on End-Of-Day data rather than live intraday tape.
