SMCI's Q4: revenue misses, margins stuck at 10%, and a $60B order book that's more hype than substance. The stock popped 7.5% after hours, but the real story is a company that can't turn growth into profit. Read the full breakdown to see why the 'timing story' is wearing thin.
The Lede and the Real Story
Super Micro Computer (SMCI) closed fiscal 2026 with a headline that would make any growth investor swoon: revenue nearly doubled to $39.1 billion, up 78% year-over-year, and the company announced a staggering $60 billion in new orders. CEO Charles Liang declared it a ‘historic milestone’ and framed the company’s transformation from a ‘U.S.A.-based server manufacturer’ into a ‘leading AI IT data center total solution company.’ But beneath the celebratory surface, the fourth quarter revealed a far more troubling picture—one of missed guidance, shrinking margins, and a stock that trades at a fraction of its former glory.
The numbers tell a more complicated story. Q4 revenue came in at $11.1 billion, below the $11.6 billion analysts expected and a sequential decline from Q3’s $12.7 billion. Non-GAAP EPS of $0.92 missed estimates by a penny, but the real red flag was gross margin—which, despite management’s claims of ‘record margins,’ remained razor-thin at around 10%, barely above the 10.1% reported in Q3. For a company that once boasted margins above 15%, this is a structural problem, not a blip.
The stock’s after-hours reaction—a modest 7.5% pop—suggests investors are clinging to the $60 billion order book as a lifeline. But as this analysis will show, that order book is less a guarantee of future prosperity and more a reflection of how desperate Super Micro has become to lock in customers at any cost. The real story is not the growth—it’s the erosion of profitability and the widening gap between management’s narrative and the operational reality.
