How This Ranking Works
Purpose. To show quickly which industry groups are gaining or losing ground, so rotation between groups is easy to see.Step 1: Which stocks count. US-listed common stocks priced at $3 or more with at least $1 million of average daily trading value. A group needs at least 6 such stocks to be ranked; groups with fewer than 8 are tagged Small Group.
Step 2: Group return. For each period (1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 12 months) the group return is the median return of its counted stocks, so one or two extreme stocks cannot carry a group. Periods are trading days: 1, 5, 10, 21, 63 and 252.
Step 3: Percentiles. Each period return is converted to a 0–100 percentile against all ranked groups (100 = best).
Step 4: Score and rank. Rank = rotation score: 1 week 20%, 2 weeks 25%, 1 month 35%, 3 months 20%. The 1-day and 12-month returns are shown for context and are not in the score (one day is mostly noise; 12 months is slow to change). The same rule is re-run on older prices to give the rank 1 to 6 weeks and 1 to 3 months ago, so past and present ranks can be compared.
Quadrant. Leading and Weakening = strong 6-month standing (percentile 50 or more) with the 1-month percentile at or above / below the 3-month percentile. Improving and Lagging = the same test for groups with weaker 6-month standing.
Rank Up / Rank Down. Rank Up = climbed 15 or more places in a week, with a 1-month percentile of 60 or more and a 3-month percentile of 40 or more. Rank Down = fell 15 or more places in a week after being in the top 40. A tag appears only when the condition holds on two runs in a row.
Limits. Ranks before the first saved date are recalculated from today's group members and may differ from what was shown at the time (delisted stocks are not included). Short-term ranks can change fast. Groups follow the official industrial classification, so names can look unfamiliar. This page describes recent price movement. It is not a signal, a forecast or investment advice.
Sector Stage and Weekly MACD Histogram Slope describe an equal-weight, daily-rebalanced index of each group's liquid US members, built from 5-trading-day bars. Stage 2 = index above a rising 150-day (30-week) average; Stage 4 = below a falling one; Stage 1 / 3 are the mixed cases (above a flat-or-falling average / below a rising one), a mechanical simplification of Weinstein's stages.
