UBS on Smartphones: Memory Costs to Weigh Again in 2027 — MediaTek, Samsung Top Picks

UBS has cut its 2027 global smartphone unit sell-in forecast to 1.11bn units, a 3% year-on-year decline, from 1.16bn (+2% YoY) previously, citing memory supply constraints and rising memory costs. The broker’s 22 September 2026 report, “Global I/O Smartphones — Memory to continue to weigh in on Smartphones in 2027,” argues that memory makers are prioritising hyperscale and AI customers, leaving smartphone OEMs facing a tighter procurement environment in 2027 than in 2026. UBS keeps Buy ratings on MediaTek and Samsung Electronics as its APAC Key Call picks, while remaining Neutral on Apple and Xiaomi.
