SoundHound AI reported a headline-grabbing second quarter: revenue of $62 million, up 45% year-over-year and 40% sequentially, with management touting it as the “largest all-time quarter” and raising full-year guidance. The stock popped 10% in after-hours trading. But beneath the celebratory numbers lies a far more troubling reality: the company’s organic growth engine is sputtering, and the quarter’s strength is largely a mirage created by the recently acquired LivePerson business.
1. the Lede and the Real Story
Strip out acquisitions, and the picture darkens dramatically. In Q1 2026, management proudly noted that the automotive and IoT AI business grew 88% year-over-year on an organic basis. In Q2, they went conspicuously silent on organic growth. The 45% year-over-year growth rate is a sharp deceleration from the 52% reported in Q1 and the 217% reported in Q2 2025. Even the sequential 40% jump—from $44.2 million to $62 million—is almost entirely attributable to the LivePerson acquisition, which closed in late Q1. The core business, ex-acquisitions, appears to be growing at a fraction of the rate the headline suggests.
Investors are left with a critical question: Is SoundHound a high-growth AI leader, or a serial acquirer using M&A to mask a deteriorating core? The answer lies in the details management chose to omit.
