TeraWulf’s $940M Loss: The AI Pivot Is a Cash Furnace, Not a Cash Cow

TeraWulf’s second-quarter 2026 earnings call was a masterclass in narrative control—but the numbers tell a different, far more uncomfortable story. The headline: revenue grew 32% year-over-year to $44.8 million, and management touted a 401-megawatt lease with Anthropic and the acquisition of the Muskie site as proof that its pivot from bitcoin mining to AI infrastructure is working. But buried in the fine print is a net loss of $939.9 million—a staggering figure that dwarfs the company’s entire market capitalization of roughly $4.5 billion. That’s not a typo. The loss is nearly 21 times the revenue for the quarter, and it represents a GAAP earnings per share of −$1.94, missing analyst estimates by a shocking 696%.

1. The Lede & The Real Story

The real story isn’t the growth narrative—it’s the cash incineration behind it. While management celebrated ‘execution’ and ‘expansion,’ the balance sheet reveals a company that is burning through capital at an alarming rate, with $3.1 billion in cash and restricted cash at the end of Q1 2026 now likely depleted by hundreds of millions after the Muskie acquisition and continued construction. The pivot to HPC leasing is real—HPC revenue grew 52% quarter-over-quarter to $21 million—but it’s still a drop in the bucket compared to the costs. The market’s reaction was telling: the stock fell 2.52% in after-hours trading, a muted response that suggests investors are starting to question whether the AI gold rush is actually translating into shareholder value.

This is not a story of a company executing flawlessly. It’s a story of a company spending billions to chase a future that may never materialize, while the present is a financial black hole. The question isn’t whether TeraWulf can sign more leases—it’s whether it can do so before the cash runs out.
