Everspin’s Record Revenue Masks a Widening Loss—and a Litigation Cloud

1. The Lede & The Real Story

Everspin Technologies reported a headline-grabbing second quarter: revenue surged 41.9% year-over-year to $18.74 million, beating analyst estimates by 8.3%. But the celebration stops there. The company’s net loss widened to $0.15 per share, missing the consensus estimate of a $0.03 loss by a staggering 462.5%. This is the central tension of the quarter: record top-line growth is being offset by ballooning litigation costs and R&D spending, leaving investors to question whether the company’s expansion is sustainable or simply a prelude to deeper financial trouble.

The real story beneath the surface is one of margin compression and rising expenses. While management touted “record revenue” and “improved margins,” the actual numbers tell a different tale. Gross margin improved to 54.1% from 52.7% in Q1, but operating expenses—driven by a $2.1 million litigation charge and a 28% jump in R&D spending—ate away any profitability gains. The company’s net loss of $2.8 million in Q2 compares to a net loss of $1.2 million in Q1, a 133% deterioration. Investors are left with a classic growth-at-any-cost narrative, but the cost is becoming harder to justify.

Adding to the concern, management’s guidance for Q3 2026 calls for revenue of $19.0–$19.5 million, implying a sequential slowdown from Q2’s 26% quarter-over-quarter growth. The company also announced a $40 million defense contract in Q1, but the details of its revenue recognition remain murky. This is a company at a crossroads: it can either convert its design wins into profitable, scalable revenue, or it will remain a perpetual money-loser propped up by investor optimism.
